A long weekend in Austin built around the Omni Barton Creek Resort works because the resort eliminates logistics and the city provides everything else. Two nights, two Fazio courses, and enough time in downtown Austin to understand why the city attracts the attention it does. This is the trip for golfers who want a concentrated experience without the commitment of a full week, or for those extending a business trip by a couple of days.
Fly into Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS). The drive to Omni Barton Creek takes 30 to 40 minutes, traffic dependent.
Early morning tee time on the Fazio Canyons, the course that Golfweek named the number one layout in Texas in 2002. This second Fazio design on property opened in 1999 and routes through canyon terrain along Short Springs Branch Creek.
Morning at the resort. The Mokara Spa opens early for those who want to close the trip with recovery rather than activity.
A rental car is advisable for the downtown Austin evening but not strictly necessary; ride-share from the resort to Sixth Street runs approximately $25 to $35 each way. The resort provides everything else within the property gates. Omni Barton Creek rates run $300 to $550 per night, with stay-and-play packages available through OmniHotels.com that bundle lodging and green fees at a modest discount. The best months for a long weekend are March through May and October through November. February and December are viable with cooler morning temperatures. Summer weekends offer lower rates but require early tee times to avoid the afternoon heat, which regularly exceeds 95 degrees from June through August.
