Hilton Head holds a Gold Level Bicycle Friendly Community designation from the American League of Bicyclists, and the infrastructure earns it. More than 60 miles of paved leisure pathways connect the island's plantation communities, beaches, and commercial areas, and 12 miles of hard-packed beach are rideable at low tide. The combination supports anything from a casual morning ride to a full day exploring the island.
Beach access is free, and the hard-packed sand on the south-end beaches feels more like a boardwalk than a beach. Riding past ocean views on a flat, stable surface is one of the more pleasant low-effort activities the island offers. The paved trail network covers forest, marsh, and oceanfront in a single loop, and you can ride for hours without retracing.
A strong rest-day pick between rounds at Harbour Town, the Palmetto Dunes courses, or anywhere else on the island.
Free if you bring your own bike. Standard rentals run $15 to $25 per day at shops including Hilton Head Bicycle Company, Hilton Head Outfitters, and Breeze Bikes. Electric bikes with delivery run roughly $40, worth considering on a rest day. Beach cycling works best at low tide; check tide charts before heading out. The paved network is available year-round regardless of tide. Book through the link on this page.
