Wisconsin produced three of the most significant championship golf venues built in the past 40 years, and all three sit within 70 miles of each other. Whistling Straits hosted three PGA Championships and the 2021 Ryder Cup. Blackwolf Run's River Course hosted two U.
Fly into Milwaukee (MKE), rent a car, and drive the 63 miles north to Kohler. Chicago O'Hare (ORD) is an alternative at 138 miles and roughly two hours and 15 minutes of driving.
The resort shuttle runs from The American Club to Whistling Straits, 10 miles east along the Lake Michigan shoreline. The Straits Course is the most photographed and most discussed course in Wisconsin, and it justifies the attention.
Check out of The American Club and drive 60 miles south to Erin Hills, near Hartford. The drive takes approximately one hour and 10 minutes and routes through Wisconsin countryside that previews the landscape you are about to play.
A rental car is required for this itinerary. The drive between Kohler and Erin Hills is 60 miles, and no shuttle service connects the two. The three courses on this itinerary all enforce or strongly encourage walking, so physical fitness matters; three consecutive days of walking hilly championship courses totaling over 22,000 yards from the tips is a genuine athletic undertaking. Comfortable walking shoes, blister prevention, and a sports massage at Kohler Waters Spa between rounds one and two are practical considerations, not luxuries.
The best months for this trip are June through September, when all three courses are at peak condition and daylight hours allow for relaxed morning tee times. May shoulder season reduces green fees and offers cooler temperatures, but morning lows in the mid-40s require layers. Book all three courses well in advance during peak season; Whistling Straits and Erin Hills fill early, particularly on weekends.
