The city's identity is so thoroughly defined by theme parks that its golf infrastructure operates in a kind of productive obscurity. That works in the visiting golfer's favor. Tee times are available, rates are reasonable by destination standards, and courses built for serious play sit twenty minutes from the tourist corridor without the pricing pressure of a Scottsdale or Pinehurst. The trick is knowing where to look and what to book before you arrive.

The Best Golf Is Not Where the Theme Parks Are

Some are adequate. None are the reason to plan a golf trip here. The courses worth traveling for are spread across greater Orlando in a roughly 30-mile radius from MCO airport, and a rental car is effectively mandatory.

The International Drive corridor and the cluster of resorts along US-192 have golf courses.

Bay Hill Club & Lodge sits in the Bay Hill neighborhood southwest of downtown, roughly 25 minutes from the parks. Orange County National occupies a quiet stretch of land near Winter Garden to the west. Reunion Resort is south near Kissimmee. Tranquilo Golf Club at Four Seasons is in the Walt Disney World property boundary but feels nothing like a theme park experience. Each of these properties operates in its own pocket of the metro area, and planning the itinerary geographically saves real time. Two rounds in a single day on opposite sides of town is feasible but leaves no room for the traffic that Orlando reliably produces.

Bay Hill Requires a Lodge Stay

This is the single most important booking detail for first-time visitors. Bay Hill is not a daily-fee course. Access requires an overnight stay at the Bay Hill Lodge, which bundles golf and accommodations into a package. The course, host to the Arnold Palmer Invitational since 1979, is the marquee round in the Orlando market and plays firm, fast, and strategic. It rewards patient course management, particularly around the water that defines the closing stretch.

Book the lodge stay directly and well in advance, especially during winter and early spring. Walk-up availability does not exist. Visitors who arrive in Orlando expecting to add Bay Hill to the itinerary at the last minute leave disappointed.

Tranquilo and Orange County National Deserve Priority

Tranquilo Golf Club at Four Seasons Orlando was originally Osprey Ridge, a Tom Fazio design that opened in 1992 as part of the Disney golf portfolio. Four Seasons acquired and renovated it, and the result is a course with genuine architectural interest and conditioning that matches the resort's standards. Access is available through a resort stay or by booking a day package. The routing moves through wetlands and mature pines, and the elevation changes are notable by Florida standards.

Orange County National offers 36 holes of legitimate championship golf at rates that undercut most competitors in the market. Panther Lake and Crooked Cat are both strong, with Panther Lake earning slightly more attention for its variety and strategic interest. Green fees typically fall between $80 and $150 depending on season, which represents considerable value for the quality of the conditioning and design. For groups looking to play 36 in a day without breaking the budget, this is the first call to make.

Reunion Resort Works for Groups

Reunion's three courses, designed by Tom Watson, Jack Nicklaus, and Arnold Palmer, are available to guests staying in the resort's rental properties. The quality varies across the three, but the convenience of having 54 holes accessible from a single base makes Reunion attractive for groups of eight or more who want to minimize logistics.

The Watson course is generally regarded as the strongest of the three, with a compact routing and more design variety than the other two layouts.

Afternoon Storms Are Not Optional Reading

From May through September, Orlando's weather pattern follows a near-daily script: clear mornings, building cumulus by early afternoon, and thunderstorms between 2:00 and 5:00 PM. These are not light rain showers. Central Florida produces more lightning strikes per square mile than almost anywhere in the continental United States. Courses clear players from the course when lightning is detected, and rounds suspended mid-play may not resume for an hour or more.

Hydration and Sun Protection Matter More Than Expected

Orlando's humidity regularly exceeds 80 percent during summer months, and the heat index can push perceived temperatures above 105 degrees Fahrenheit even when the actual reading is lower. The combination of sustained sun exposure and heavy humidity produces fatigue faster than dry-heat destinations. Carry water beyond what feels necessary. Apply sunscreen before the round and reapply at the turn. A wide-brimmed hat is more useful here than in any desert market.

Winter visitors face a different but related issue: the sun sits lower in the sky but remains strong, and the assumption that 75-degree weather does not require sun protection leads to sunburns that affect the rest of the trip.

Getting There and Getting Around

Orlando International Airport (MCO) serves as the arrival point for nearly all visitors, with direct flights from most major U.S. cities and a growing number of international routes. The new Terminal C, which opened in 2022, handles several carriers and connects to the main terminal via an automated train.
