Twelve Holes, No Tee Times, Pure Golf
Bowling Green, Florida · 12 holes · Par 46 · Resort (overnight guests only)
The Chain exists because Tom Doak looked at a parcel of Streamsong's reclaimed phosphate mining land and saw an opportunity for something different from the championship-length courses he had already built on the property. The result, which opened in 2017 alongside Gil Hanse's Black course, is a 12-hole layout designed for late afternoon play, social rounds, and the kind of golf that does not require a warm-up session or a pre-round strategy discussion.
No tee times are required. Walking is the only option. The course plays at roughly 2,400 yards with a par of 46, mixing short par 3s with mid-length par 4s that play quickly and reward instinct over deliberation. The absence of the full 18-hole structure changes the psychology of the round. There is no front nine to recover from, no back nine to protect. Twelve holes creates a pace that feels complete without feeling long.
Doak applied the same design intelligence to The Chain that he brought to the Red and Blue, scaled to the shorter format. The greens are interesting without being punitive. The terrain features that define the Streamsong landscape are present throughout, with the same sand ridges and native grasses that characterize the championship courses framing holes that are more approachable but no less thoughtful. A golfer who plays all four Streamsong courses will recognize Doak's hand here even at the reduced scale.
The social quality of The Chain is part of its design intent. Groups finish in roughly 90 minutes, often less, and the no-tee-time format means that the pace is set by the players rather than by a schedule. It is the right course for the day when the main round ended at 2 PM and the evening has not yet begun, or for the member of the group who wants to play golf without committing to a four-and-a-half-hour block.
The format also lends itself to formats and games that do not translate well to a full 18-hole round. Match play over 12 holes moves quickly and decisively. A skins game with a group of four produces results in under two hours. The absence of a rigid tee-time schedule means that groups can start when they arrive and play at whatever pace suits them, which removes the clock pressure that can diminish the enjoyment of casual golf.
Green fees are estimated at $50 to $75 as an add-on to a full round at one of the three 18-hole courses. At that price, relative to the quality of the design and the distinctiveness of the Streamsong terrain, The Chain represents one of the better values in Florida golf. It is not a practice facility or a warm-up course. It is a Tom Doak design on remarkable land, compressed to a format that prioritizes enjoyment over endurance.
