Whale watching is the winter activity that competes with the Kapalua Plantation Course for most memorable thing you'll do in Maui. Roughly 10,000 humpback whales migrate from Alaska to the warm, shallow waters around Maui to breed and calve each winter. The Auau Channel between Maui and Lanai sees one of the highest concentrations on earth, and February and March are peak.
Tours depart from Lahaina and Ma'alaea harbors multiple times daily on a two-hour format that produces several sightings without eating the day. Smaller zodiacs hold a dozen and put you closer to the water. Larger catamarans carry 50 or more and trade intimacy for stability and amenities. Most boats carry naturalists who explain breaches, pec slaps, and spy hops as you watch them happen. Sightings during peak season are virtually guaranteed, and many operators offer a free return trip if you don't see whales.
Seasonal: December through April only. Morning departures have calmer water, which matters if you're prone to seasickness. Cost runs $40 to $70, among the most affordable activities on the islands. Two hours leaves the rest of the day free for golf. Suitable for all ages and fitness levels.
