Elkhorn Slough is a seven-mile tidal estuary in Moss Landing where sea otter sightings are about as close to guaranteed as wildlife encounters get.
The slough holds one of the densest southern sea otter populations in California, and the calm, sheltered water lets you observe them at remarkably close range, often feeding, grooming, or sleeping in rafts on the surface. Harbor seals, pelicans, great blue herons, and the occasional river otter round out the regulars. Because there are no waves or strong currents, this works for paddlers with no prior experience. Guides handle instruction. The pace follows the wildlife rather than the distance, with two to three miles covered over the session. For travelling companions, it's one of the strongest non-golf options on the peninsula, combining outdoor recreation with a wildlife encounter that almost always delivers.
Two and a half to three hours, with morning departures standard. $55 to $75 adults, $50 children. No experience required; equipment provided. Dress in layers that can get wet, and bring strong sun protection because the water amplifies exposure. Moss Landing is 25 minutes north of Monterey on Highway 1, which makes this a clean rest-day option or a morning before an afternoon round at Pacific Grove or Spanish Bay. Book ahead for summer and weekends.
