The Fort Worth Stockyards operated as one of the world's largest livestock markets for over a century, and the district feels genuine rather than reconstructed because the unbroken connection to its original purpose remains intact.
The twice-daily Texas longhorn cattle drive down Exchange Avenue is the signature draw. At 11:30 a.m. and 4 p.m., drovers in period attire guide a herd of longhorns through the brick streets. It's the only daily cattle drive in the world, and watching it costs nothing. The surrounding district extends across several blocks of Western shops, restaurants, saloons, and entertainment venues. The White Elephant Saloon and Billy Bob's Texas occupy different ends of the honky-tonk spectrum, one intimate and the other claiming the title of world's largest. The Stockyards Championship Rodeo runs weekend evenings. The livestock exchange building still stands, the holding pens are visible, and 1890s architecture has been maintained rather than replaced. For visitors from outside Texas, this delivers the strongest sense of regional identity available in the area.
District free to enter. Guided walking tours $15 adults, reduced rates for seniors and children, departing 10 a.m., 12:30 p.m., and 2 p.m. daily. Located at 131 East Exchange Avenue, roughly 45 minutes west of PGA Frisco, with I-35W traffic varying significantly by time of day. Weekday mornings are easiest.
