Highway 1 enters Big Sur within 30 minutes south of Carmel, and the drive that follows ranks among the most photographed stretches of road in the world. Bixby Bridge, a concrete arch spanning a deep canyon above the Pacific, appears about 13 miles south of Carmel and serves as the visual signature of the entire coast. Beyond it, the road runs through redwood canyons and along cliff edges to McWay Falls, which drops 80 feet onto a beach you can only see, and Pfeiffer Beach, where a keyhole rock formation frames the sunset on certain days of the year.
The self-drive option costs nothing beyond gas, but the road is not a loop and the single-lane bridges keep the pace slow. Allow two to three hours each way to reach McWay Falls with stops at Bixby Bridge and Pfeiffer Beach. A half-day turnaround at Bixby Bridge works as an afternoon following a morning round.
Guided tours from Monterey run four to five hours, narrated, with the major stops covered and someone else doing the driving. A practical option for solo travelers or couples who would rather share the burden.
Attempting Pebble Beach Golf Links and Big Sur in the same day is technically possible and practically unwise. Both deserve unhurried attention.
Self-drive is free; guided tours run $100 to $165 per person over four to five hours. Highway 1 is subject to closures from mudslides and construction, so check Caltrans road conditions before leaving. Cell service drops south of Carmel; download maps in advance. Gas stations are sparse. Pfeiffer Beach charges a separate entrance fee and the turn off the highway is easy to miss. Book guided tours through the link on this page.
