Old Town Bandon sits along the Coquille River, a compact stretch of independent shops, galleries, restaurants, and a waterfront boardwalk. The town's population is about 3,200, but the quality of what is here exceeds what the size suggests.
The Washed Ashore Gallery shows large-scale sculptures built entirely from ocean debris collected on Oregon beaches. The work is striking and carries its environmental message without preaching. A public crabbing dock extends into the river for anyone inclined to try, and a sculpture garden runs along the boardwalk.
For a Bandon Dunes trip, Old Town's main role is dining. The resort restaurants are solid, but a handful of independent kitchens in town serve local seafood with more personality and lower prices. On a five-night stay, one evening here breaks the resort routine in a way that refreshes the rest of the trip.
About 20 minutes from the resort by car. Shops and restaurants generally run 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. with seasonal variation. Street parking is easy. Free to wander; dining and shopping at your own cost.
